Jason Hill has been building cars and trucks professionally since 1995, but started on his personal cars in high school. This explains his love for the 79-86 bodystyle. He’s been called in the “Squarebody King” in several truck magazines.
His first paint jobs were on tractors in his dad’s shop when he was a kid.
His first “big” build was a 1939 Ford pickup that he built for himself. It was done from the frame up and built in the warehouse at the John Deere where he worked at the time.
The start of Hill’s Hot Rods was as a part time job/hobby while he worked at the John Deere house in Brownfield, Texas. He would work at the John Deere during the day and at his shop at night and on weekends. He started out working on his own cars – but was approached by several farmers to fix things for them or paint mirrors and rollpans. He worked these dual jobs for several years until he had enough business to open full time as Hill’s Hot Rods. Now it’s been 15 years!
Hill started in a 1,000 square foot building and after 3 years moved to Lubbock and a new custom built building of around 3,600 square feet. We remember thinking – this is way too big, we’ll never have to move again. But 6 years later we added an additional 2,500 sqf and again thought we would never fill it up.
Last year Hill’s moved to a new 26,000 sqf building and it already full of customers projects.
This new space enabled us to add many things that make our employees jobs easier. We also have separate rooms and spaces for different aspects of a build. There is room for both custom work and collision.
Vehicles built by Hill’s Hot Rods have been featured in over 46 magazine articles and cover stories. We’ve built many show stoppers and Best of Show winners.
“Back at Ya” is a 1976 Chevy Blazer. The fiberglass top has been replaced by the top and back doors from a 1981 suburban. The bumpers are frenched into the fenders. It is equipped with Air Ride Technologies air, Bonspeed 22inch wheels, LSI Motor, Baer Brakes, everything has been shaved, and of course a custom interior from JD Glassworks.
The name “Back at Ya” is just what it says – this blazer was originally taken to SEMA in 2004. At the time is was blue and white with graphics. It actually previewed at a show in downtown Las Vegas on Freemont Street where it won it’s first Best of Show award.
A few months later on the way to SEMA, it was backed in to during a photo shoot at Hoover Dam. It still when to SEMA – we tried to hide the damage with a sign. After that it was taken home and parked in the garage for several years, totally ignored. We had gotten so busy we really just forgot about it or maybe lost interest for a few years.
We decided, after many people asking what had ever happened to it, to redo it and bring it back out.
It was gutted and sanded down – and given the look it has now. Some people liked it better the first time, my wife included. But it’s won numerous Best of Shows since it’s “re-introduction” – so there’s still a lot of admiration for the work it took to build it.
