‘Polynesian Spectacle’  1910 Ford Coupe

Doug Weigel

Doug Weigel’s Polynesian Spectacle, a 1910 Ford Model T, one of this year’s featured cars at The Super Nationals, was completely hand built by Weigel. When we say hand built, we really mean, hand built. Weigel starts with 2” X 4” steel tubing for the frame and then fabricates the body, out of 1” X 1” tubing for a skeleton and 16 gauge sheet metal for the skin. The 350 engine and transmission, aluminum intakes, fenders, and steering wheel are all custom built by Weigel. Even the door handles and gas pedal are his creations. The paint and graphics were done by Corey Ringo, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Weigel came up with the name for the car by joining his custom aluminum eyeglass windshield with Ringo’s creation of the tiki tearing out of the contoured back. The custom interior was done by Bobby Griffey, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Griffey is best known for doing ZZTop’s Cadzilla. Weigel credits his friends Scott Smith, Charles Little, Juan Guttierrez, and Ron Brousseau for their help along the way.

Weigel is a steel sculptor and prototype fabricator in Albuquerque, New Mexico and farms in Woodruff County, Arkansas. He started building street rods as a teenager in Knoxville, Tennessee. His favorite cars were ‘28 and ‘29 roadsters. He would buy parts that he needed at junkyards or would buy whole cars for $50 to get the parts he needed. He worked on other peoples cars too, after school and working on the family dairy farm. He also raced those cars two nights a week. He started building cars again about twelve years ago after a long gap of time like most guys who work and raise a family. His current project is a 1916 Milk Truck which he expects to have finished in early March. If you happen to have the February, 1963 issue of Rod & Custom you’ll see one of Weigel’s ‘29 Roadsters and if you would like to get to know him a little better check out the October issue of NM Magazine.

Weigel loves to build cars from the ground up rather than restoring old cars now. He has been showing his creations the last six years or so at car show in San Francisco, Boise, Tulsa, Reno and San Jose just to name a few, but his greatest honor has been being accepted to Blackie Gejeian’s Invitation Only Fresno Autorama the past four years with his last four creations. He has also been invited with his new project for this year’s show.
