“GT-39” ‘39 Ford DeLuxe Convertible
Cindy & Mike Warn
Aurora, Oregon

Featured Builder: Tim Divers: Divers Streeet Rods: Startup, Washington

Tucked away in the Cascade foothills of Western Washington State, you'll hear the sounds of metal grinding mixed with AC-DC crackling over the radio. This is where Tim Divers of Divers Street Rods, Inc. and a talented group of gear-heads create.

Raised in Fall City Washington, Tim's young years were spent working at his cousins Model Garage. Along the way building his own hot rods such as a 1960 Chevy Pickup and a 1970 Chevelle, which was later raffled off on a Seattle Radio show for Cherry-Cola.

Divers Street Rods, Inc. has become a competing source in the world of rods. The success behind Tim with Divers Street Rods, Inc. can be found through Tim's own personal integrity. “I would not, under any circumstance, allow a vehicle to leave my shop unless I was willing to put my family in that car. Safety first.” The tag-line for Divers Street Rods, Inc. is: a) Think out of the box b) Dare to be different c) If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room. Divers' customers range from the East Coast to the West, including the Hawaiian Islands; returning again and again for this type of performance and the knowledge that the end product will not only be pleasing to the eye but safe...and 'outrageous'.

The GT39 was originally built by Divers back in the 80's when it was featured in Rod Action as “Warn's Weekender”. Twenty-some years later owner Cindy Warn decided it needed a face-lift. This started in 2006, but had to take a backseat to her husband Mike's project.

In 2008 Divers Street Rods, Inc. took Mike's project, a 1960 Rambler with a 2002 Ferrari powered motor to the Detroit AutoRama Show. “Ferrambo” took the industry by surprise with its ingenuity, craftsmanship and creativity, walking away with the coveted Ridler award.

After the show work focused back to Cindy's GT39. Re-done with a Ford GT Motor under the hood, which lead into a stretch here, a nip and tuck there, resulting in only 20% of the original Ford tin was left. A complete body modification that has resulted in an absolutely stunning street rod.

Divers Street Rods, Inc. continues to create, the next projects due out of the foothills are a '54 Chevy with an all aluminum big block, a '57 Cadillac Brougham with a Duramax diesel, and a '72 Volkswagen Bus with a Subaru STI motor (yes, you read that correctly).

All these these projects and more can be viewed at http://www.diversstreetrods.com

“Super Wasp” 46 Hudson Pickup
Bob Bruhn
Los Olibos, California

From the small California town of Los Olivos comes Bob Bruhn's 46 Hudson Pickup dubbed "Super Wasp".

All told it took three years to complete, but the time and effort was well worth the result. The truck is a true custom from the TCI frame up.

All the modifications were done in steel, no fiberglass was used. The cab was stretched seven inches and coupe doors were added with hidden hinges. The windshield was laid back approx two inches and the top chopped 1.5 inches. Drip rails were molded into the roof. The hood was cut into five pieces, pie cut, and reassembled. Then the unique twin tunnel entry to the shotgun blower scoop was added. The front fenders were extended, welded to the cab and the headlights frenched. The grille is a one-off custom designed by Bob and machined from billet aluminum. The bed was shortened eighteen inches and the rear fenders widened four inches. Matching fenders were used inside the bed to finish the tubs housing the huge 16" wide rear tires. The whole interior from the dash and console to the seat surround is all hand fabricated from steel. The running gear consists of a 500 cid Big Block Chevy sporting an 871 blower topped with Hilborn injection. This monster spins a 4L80E tranny backed by a Gear Vendors overdrive and a Speedway Engineering quick change rear end drives the tires.

One last thing, everyone who heard about it said, "Bob, you CAN"T put the tail lights in the exhaust! They'll melt!" Well Bob's got news for 'em, go have a look!

“Hem Rod” 32 Ford Rod Sedan
Don Smith
Mansfield Texas

Featured Builder: Eric Peratt: Pinkee’s Rod Shop: Windsor Colorado

After graduating from college and working at General Motors for six years, Eric Peratt realized his true passion was building cars, not being behind a desk at a car company. With the completion and sale of a 1933 Chevy Woody Eric built in a three-car garage, Pinkee’s Rod Shop was on its way.
“Selling the ‘33 Chevy allowed me to buy some essential equipment and relocate to Colorado which is where I wanted my family and hot rod shop to be”, says Eric. Once in Colorado, Eric built an 1800 sq. ft. shop at his home and completed the 1998 Detroit Autorama Ridler Award winner – the 1933 Ford roadster “Comet”. In 1998, Pinkee’s incorporated and became official. Since then, Eric moved Pinkee’s to a scenic area in northern Colorado with views of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Eastern Plains. The current shop now covers 10,000 sq ft with state-of-the-art equipment and a new Haas CNC Machining Center (Almost Famous Design) for creating one off, detail pieces that Pinkee’s is known for. Pinkee’s has recently started a product line including 32 sectioned frame rails, crossmembers, spring clamps and motor mounts.
Eric and the crew at Pinkee’s have been recipients of many prestigious awards in the hot rod industry beginning with the Ridler award in 1998. Some of the other noteworthy awards are: Goodguys Trendsetter, Grand National Roadster Show Builder of the Year, Goodguys Street Rod of the Year, Goodguys Custom Rod of the Year, Chip Foose Design Excellence Award and many Goodguys top 5 awards with numerous cars including Hemrod.
Hemrod is a heavily modified 1932 Ford Tudor Sedan sitting on a Pinkee’s sectioned deuce chassis. Hemrod has one off real knock off wheels and many other one off detail parts on the car. A 392 Chrysler Hemi powers Hemrod with a TKO 600 5 speed transmission. Hemrod is owned by Don Smith from Mansfield, TX. Don is a former drag racer that ran the Pro Stock Truck Series in the early 2000’s.
The same determination, persistence, teamwork, quality employees and perfection that Eric, his wife Cristin, and all the crew have put into building Pinkee’s Rod Shop goes into every car, whether it’s just adding A/C to a car or building a dream car from the ground up.
You can see many of the cars that Pinkee’s has built and is currently working on at http://www.pinkeesrodshop.com or in person in Colorado – stop by and see us anytime.

“UNO” “Custom Chopper Motorcycle”
Dalton Walker
Hanford, CA
Split Image Kustoms, Hanford, CA

Painters: Dion Giuliano’s Kal Koncepts, and Craig Fraser’s Air Syndicate

Dalton, 30yrs. old, welding comes naturally having been raised and working side by side with his father since 13yrs. old. in their own welding and fabrication shop, Walkers Welding in Laton Ca., and started his side business Split Image Kustoms (s.I.k. Motorcycles). He is known locally for several modified and air bagged trucks that have appeared in several different magazines since 2000, and more recently motorcycles. He has gained a lot of recognition as one of a few welders that build their own frames and parts. His first bike "UNO" took 3yrs. to build. It's simplicity is unique and the paint is flawless. The paint was was done by his good friends at Kal Koncepts & Air Syndicate by Dion Guilliano and Craig Frasier. Last fall Dalton took UNO to Las Vegas for Bikefest and won 1st. place in the Radical Division, which landed him an invitation to Artistry In The Iron Competition this past year. UNO went on to compete at the Easyriders shows in Los Angeles and Sacramento where he won both in the Evo Radical and Best Paint categories. UNO was shot by world famous motorcycle photographer "Michael Lichter" and is due to be in an upcoming Easyriders Magazine. UNO has also appeared in several magazines such as Cycle Source, Low Rider, Thunder Press, Air Brush Action, Back Street Heroes, Street Truck, and Street Choppers. UNO was displayed at the 2010 SEMA show in the IAWATA paint gun booth. Dalton also took UNO and competed at the Hippy Killer Hoedown show where he won the "Freddy Hernandez Award." Quite an honor coming from a living legend such as Freddy Hernandez, an "old school builder." More recently, Dalton took UNO to Long Beach to the Ultimate Builder Custom Show and placed 3rd. in the Freestyle Division. Dalton is currently showing a new build which has landed him a spot in the American Motorcycle Dealer World Championship at Sturgis SD in 2012, and has won the David Mann "Best of Show, and Cycle Source Awards." Dalton's old and new creations can be followed at splitimagekustoms.blogspot.com

Dalton Walker has been a welder, and fabrication specialist for his fathers company for as long as he can remember. A few years ago, he started up his own kustom fabrication shop, “Spit Image Kustoms” ( “SIK” for short) At the same time he began working on a few choppers. Dalton did not want to just modify up existing bikes, he wanted to create bikes that no one had ever seen before, but with the old world craftsmanship, so that people would be fooled into swearing the bikes were original production models. Dalton not only hand fabricates the frames, bars, and engine mounts, but the wheels, and front ends as well. When you see one of Dalton’s creations, you would be hard pressed to point out what is factory, and what is fiction. All of Dalton’s creations have been painted by Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate Inc. His favorite paint work is just as old school as his creations, Kandies, patterns, and metalflake! Dalton has taken best of show at the Easyrider events an unprecedented 4 times, with his blue chopper, and gold bobber. Keep an eye out at Sturgis this year for the new stretched “Denver” style chopper he is building for Craig Fraser of Air Syndicate.

Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate, Bakersfield, CA
Dion Giuliano’s Kal Koncepts, and Craig Fraser’s Air Syndicate have been working together for 20 years. While Dion specializes in fiberglass fabrication, painting, and clearcoating, Craig is more known for Airbrushing, Pinstriping, kustom graphics, and the fine art of the Kustom Kulture. Between the two of them they have seen KKAS go through the highs, and lows of the Kustom Kulture, and many changeds in the steyles, and trends of the kustom paint industry. With more than 65 magazine covers, and 350 features, Dion, and Craig have been able to stay on the leading edge of kustom painting for the past three decades. Finishing up their team for the past 6 years has been Brandon Lambie of Black Sheep Kustoms. Between the three of them there is little that cannot by kustomized, modified, painted, and airbrushed in their shop. Whether it be a chopper for the Easy Rider show, Guitars for Fender, and Jackson, a full blown drift car for HoK, or a set of Drums for Poison, Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate is always up to the challenge. http://www.gotpaint.com

Dion Giuliano’s Kal Koncepts, and Craig Fraser’s Air Syndicate have been working together for 20 years. Paint to live, live to paint
Rice Fink started out as a cab of a 66 Subaru JDM caretaker’s truck, that had been sitting behind Dion’s shop for over 20 years. One day Dion literally decided he wanted to not only finish it, but to get it done in time for SEMA. In three months this truck went from a frameless cab to the micro-truck you see today. Powered by a Yamaha Genesis 600cc engine with an independent sandrail rearend. The entire frame is handbuilt, as well as the rear bed. It is fully hydraulic, sponsored by Reds, and even sports a full stereo system sponsored by Sony. The paintjob is 100% House of Kolor kandies, layered over flakes, and pearls. Usually showing in specialty class, or radical, the Rice Fink has remained undefeated I the past dozen shows. The theme of the Rice Fink is based on Ed, “Big Daddy” Roth’s Rat Fink character. The truck itself is a tribute to the vehicles built by Big Daddy, and the influence he had on the Kustom Kulture

“Drift Drag Car” 89 F/13 Sylvia Nissan
Natalia Guillano
Bakersfield, CA

Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate Inc, Bakersfield, CA

Natalia Giuliano’s S-13 Driftcar started out as a humble late 80’s 240 SX. After dropping in a RB-20 turbo charged Skyline powerplant, the car was elevated to driftcar status. That still was not enough for Dion, and his Daughter Natalia Giuliano. So he had VL Speed Pull the engine, upgrade the turbo, intercooler, intake, and just about every other goodie on it, while Brandon Lambie cut off, and swapped the entire front end for a Right Hand Drive JDM set up. After putting it all together, with a new body kit, HoK paint, wheels, megan racing brakes, Mob Shop roll cage, and Addictive Audio sound system, the car was ready for Natalia to showcase it in the Dub Booth at SEMA 2011. (Not a bad ride for a 15 year old who has been addicted to Jr. Dragster Raging, and go karts since the age of 8)

Dion Giuliano’s Kal Koncepts, and Craig Fraser’s Air Syndicate have been working together for 20 years. “Milk Truck” 1916 Ford Milk Truck
Doug Weigel
Albuquerque NM

Doug Weigel's 1916 Ford Model T Milk Truck is one of this year's featured cars at the Super Nationals.

This one-of-a-kind, all steel body milk truck was hand-built by the owner, Doug Weigel. It is powered by a blown 350 Chevrolet engine, 400 transmission and 8.8 Ford rear-end. The aluminum milk jugs, breathers and interior were also created by Doug.

Doug built this milk truck not only because he loves creating vehicles similar to the ones in the early 1900’s and making them hot rods—he also wanted to pay tribute to his family’s history of being in the dairy business in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He designed this truck from the Model T trucks they used in his Grandfather’s day. He used the original name and phone number from the dairy he grew up on, in Knoxville. It was located on the French Broad River.

Doug lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and still has all of the original, one-of-a-kind cars he has created (all in steel) over the past several years. Weigel is a steel sculptor and prototype fabricator in Albuquerque, New Mexico and farms in Woodruff County, Arkansas. He started building street rods as a teenager in Knoxville, Tennessee. His favorite cars were ‘28 and ‘29 roadsters. He would buy parts that he needed at junkyards or would buy whole cars for $50 to get the parts he needed. He worked on other peoples cars too, after school and working on the family dairy farm. He also raced those cars two nights a week. He started building cars again about twelve years ago after a long gap of time like most guys who work and raise a family.

“Blind Side” 85 C/10 Pickup
Jason Hill
Lubbock Texas

“Blind Side” 85 C/10 Pickup
Jason Hill was called “the King of Squarebodies” by Truckin’ Magazine over 8 years ago. His love for the 1981-87 square body Chevy pickups comes from getting one to drive while he was in high school. Over the years he has built more of this body style than we can count. He has collected one of all the body styles available from the 80’s truck era – an award winning super custom blazer that was won Best of Show awards across the country and was a Street Trucks cover vehicle, a dually that he loves to drive and still with the original paint, a custom four door shortbed, numerous single cabs both custom and retro, and this amazing find – a rare extended cab.
Blind Side – named after Jason’s loss of sight in one eye and a play on words for his competition – sits on a custom built frame done in the Hill’s shop, painted in the same lime green as the outside. The dash is from a 64 Chevelle (another of his favorite cars- and that he’s built several of) with 1969 Camaro gauges. The truck has flaming PPG paint and a custom Lipstick Red interior. The front wheel wells have been section to help with the stance – and the truck definitely lays the frame on the ground.
Jason started building trucks in high school, but started his business several years later in 1995 in a 1,500 sq.ft. shop. After building a 6,000 sq.ft shop and realizing it to was still too small – he now occupies a 24,000 square foot state of the art shop with 8 employees , which also houses his friend and custom interior builder Jimmy Davis of JD Glassworks.
Hill’s Hot Rods built trucks and cars have been on the cover of or featured in over 80 magazine articles. He built trucks that have placed 2nd at the F100 Nationals 2 times, many many Best of Show awards, SEMA feature vehicles for the past 10 years, and most recently built Fast Lane – the truck that was awarded Good Guys 2011 Truck of the Year.

“Black Dragon” 1944 V Model Mack Firetruck
Roger Brown:
Builder: Tom Stark, Precision Designs
Lawrence, Kansas

Builder: Tom Stark grew up going to car shows, drag racing in the Denver area and working on his dad's and friends' autos in his free time. He became an aerospace machinist out of high school and after about 5 years decided to work on Hot Rods everyday for a living. Tom worked for Zoomers Automotive for seven years. Leaving there he went to work at Pinkees were he honed in his skills for another two and a half years. Deciding to try it out on his own, Precision Designs opened in 2009. Currently in a 2500 sq ft shop located in Henderson, Colorado, Precision Designs focuses on specialty vehicles that operate to a very high level. Tom's first solo project was a 1968 Camaro. With it showing very well just in bare metal, Precision Designs moved on to other projects, including the 1944 Mack Firetruck for Roger Brown.
Tom and Roger met while working races as part of NHRA's Safety Safari. Roger and his wife Rhonda live in Lawrence, Kansas where Roger is a Pierce Firetruck Salesman for Conrad Fire Equipment(http://www.conradfire.com). Roger's initial interest in the firetruck was for use in parades to help promote his business.
How does one end up doing a Hot Rod Firetruck as a project you ask? The phone call went like this. “Hi Tom, What do you think about building a Hot Rod Firetruck? I asked...uhh how big is it? Will it fit in the shop? “ After sending over pictures, discussing what Roger wanted out of it ,coming up with a rendering, 14 months of hard work and sometimes frustrating engineering for such a big, heavy vehicle, the completion looks like this.
The Firetruck started as a basic lower with big wheels and cool drive train. Then the task came, how to execute? Tom designed the front and rear suspension to accommodate the weight of the vehicle using 2” diameter 4 bars and air bags (ACCUAIR) on all 4 corners. The front 4 bar mounts and air bag mounts are engineered into the same component mounting to the stock axle. Steering, spindles, and front floaters are GM 1 ton. Brakes are from SRT 10 ram truck. The rear suspension is a triangulated 4 bar 2” in diameter sprung with tapered sleeve air bags. The axle is 2008 Dodge SRW, narrowed 14” with SRT 10 ram rear brakes. Engine and trans are from 2005 SRT 10 ram crew cab.
The body has been stretched 5.5” to make it a little easier to get in and out of. We took the 5.5 from the front of the bed. The rear fenders have been “tubbed” to fit the huge duals under the rear. The entire front sheet metal has been realigned and fit to the truck straight and square. The windshield has been chopped 4” to keep in proportion with the vehicle. A lot of the panels were replaced and running boards were made from scratch. The Ergonomics of the truck are modified to sit the driver down in the vehicle versus sitting on top like a buss. Steering column, pedal location and seat location have all been fit the driver. All this was done while trying to keep the commercial feel inside and out. With everything complete in bare metal the 1944 Mack was sent off to Nice Rides Restorations for the “Dripping black” single stage. The chrome work was all executed by Jon Writes Custom Chrome while interior was done by Pjs upholstery. The final touch of Gold Leaf and lettering were completed by Speedway Graphics.

Along with working within Pierce Fire Truck as a successful sales person for over 24 years Roger maintains his time with his wife and family, married to Rhonda for 24 years, Two sons - Arron 29, Adam 27 "We wanted to do a family project, I always wanted a Hot Rod after the ones I had growing up but now the fire truck seemed to be a better fit since I have been in the business of selling them for so long. I grew up in SW Iowa, Graduated from Clarinda, IA. HS and then attended some college and tech classes and soon moved to Missouri. I moved for business reasons to Kansas 30 years ago and have been located in Lawrence, KS. ever since."

In Person - Kenny Youngblood
MEET LEGENDARY AUTOMOTIVE ARTIST KENNY YOUNGBLOOD!!!

KENNY YOUNGBLOOD:
Pioneering The Art Of Speed
No one person has influenced the artistic appeal of motor sports more than Kenny Youngblood.

Youngblood’s visually flamboyant career in hot rod art began to blossom in the late 1960’s, when he started out doing hand lettering and airbrushing on many of the top funny cars and dragsters in the country. His work defined the genre and captivated fans around the world; setting benchmarks for style and innovative effects.

In the mid seventies, he moved onto the drawing board, designing graphics and illustrations for literally hundreds of clients in an exploding performance industry; establishing himself as the first full-time artist specializing in the field.

In the late seventies, he moved ahead yet again. This time, from the drawing board to the easel; creating fine art paintings that depicted a myriad of hot rod and racing subjects. Realizing there was potentially a huge audience, Youngblood published and sold the images to the mass market; unknowingly becoming the lone pioneer of today’s billion-dollar motor sport collectibles business, and almost a decade before the rest of the racing world eventually caught on!

Kenny’s God given talent combined with his love for drag racing and hot rods, has left an indelible mark on the way performance vehicles look today, and a mark who’s timeless beauty will reflect itself with every new generation.
